Announcing auditions for:
Shakespeare's

Macbeth

adapted by Dan Smirlock
directed by Sandra Boynton

To be performed at Shaker Heritage Site, Mt. Ida Preservation Hall,

Murray’s Fool Distillery; specifics TBA.

Performance dates: March 13-15, 20-22, 27-29

Rehearsals begin February 2

This version of Macbeth treats the play as essentially a domestic drama situated in a densely conflicted political environment, with a tighter focus on the actions of and relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. As in Greek tragedy, it matters that the characters are kings and queens, but it matters more that they are spouses, parents (or not), and sons.

This production of Macbeth will use 10-12 actors with a minimum amount of doubling. Lennox, Ross, and Seyton are now very substantial parts, while the Witches are doubled as Murderers, and Lady Macbeth doubles as a Witch. And while this version retains the significance of Three Witches, their dramatic power is derived from the text and staging rather than smoke and mirrors or special effects. Practical foley effects, music, and evocative design promise to make this a singularly unique retelling of this story. â€‹This version is an attempt at a one-act Macbeth. It should run no more than 90 minutes.

Audition Details:
Date & Time: Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7, 1-4 PM

All who audition:

  1. Will prepare and perform 10-20 lines of early modern verse (Shakespeare, Jonson, Marlowe, etc.). Thorough memorization is a big plus.

  2. Will read from sides, provided below.

  3. May present a special talent—a song, an instrumental solo, juggling, stand-up comedy, interpretive dance, axe-throwing (video preferred)… WKP routinely uses personal talents in production and performance and we love actors with unique skillsets.

Auditioners have a maximum of 4 minutes to present their verse selections and special talents. Auditions are open format; you will be performing in front of your peers as well as the directors and production staff. Please plan to stay for the full duration of one audition day.
